The 998 is an upgraded version of the 996, only lasted for one season in 2002. The engine shared few parts with the 996. It featured the test engine across all models.
The Ducati 996 had a bore and stroke of 98.0 x 66.0 mm. The bore and stoke of the 998 were 100.0 x 63.5 mm. The included valve angle was reduced from 40 degrees on the 996 to 25 degrees on the 998. Valve sizes were increased, and the camshafts had slightly increased lift. This raised peak revs from 8500 to 9750, and raised the horsepower from 112 to 123. [1]
A 2001 Ducati 996, in dark green, was featured in the 2003 motion picture The Matrix Reloaded[2]. Trinity, played by Carrie-Anne Moss, escapes her pursuers riding the superbike. Stunt doubled by Debbie Evans, it is considered one of the all time great chase scenes. Ducati subsequently announced a limited edition of similar bikes in a very dark green color, but as production of the 996 had since ceased, these were actually 998-engined bikes.
